Introduction

Hezekiah brought a lot to the table of Israel’s kingly leadership. He was preceeded by a nasty father who’s prolific idolatry poisoned a divided nation and divided them further still. However, in between the closing words of chapter 28 and the opening account of chapter 29 of Second Chronicles, we Hezekiah begins his rule by ‘cleaning house.’
His father’s final work was to close the doors to the House of God. Hezekiah’s first act of obedience was to open and repair them. (2 Chron. 29:1-3)
Hezekiah was young and enthusiastic. The chronicler gives more time and explanation to King Hezekiah than any other kings of Israel and Judah save David and Solomon! He made quite the impression in his early reign. Perhaps it is because Hezekiah put a stop to the rampant immorality and ineffectiveness of the priesthood. He immediately called the priests and Levites to action. They were originally tasked with serving as intercessors between God and Israel. He removed the barriers of idolatry and re-paved a way between Yahweh and Israel. Hezekiah re-established the worship his father had destroyed.
Today, at the communion table, we celebrate Christ’s removal of the sin barrier between God and man. By way of his once-for-all-time sacrifice, Jesus establishes every follower’s relationship with God and solicits a spirit of unity and praise.
